A very brief history of yoga

Where did it all begin?

It is said that Yoga was first developed over 5,000 years ago by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India. It has subsequently been mentioned in various sacred texts. But in large part the transmission of yoga history has been oral and as such its origins and progression throughout the ages has been somewhat shrouded in mystery. Yoga 5,000 years ago will most certainly be quite removed from the yoga we practice today and that has also brought with it a degree of controversy.

Yoga history:

Yoga’s history can be split into six main periods of practice, development and reference. These are: pre-vedic, vedic, pre-classical, classical, post classical and modern. Historians far more knowledgeable than me have written some wonderful and detailed books on the history of yoga, which I would recommend having a look at. If you are of a mind to, do check out Mark Singleton’s ‘Yoga Body’ which explores the origins of modern yoga practice.

Looking at a more traditional understanding of the origins of yoga I have included a ‘History of Yoga’ download below.
